ATP: Philipp Kohlschreiber makes dream finale in Munich perfect

Philipp Kohlschreiber is in the final of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Munich for the sixth time. Germany’s number two defeated Maximilian Marterer and will face defending champion Alexander Zverev in the final.

Philipp Kohlschreiber was allowed to leave the Center Court at MTTC Iphitos three times with the winning car – tomorrow, Sunday, the Augsburg native will get his next chance. Kohlschreiber defeated Maximilian Marterer 6-2 in the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Munich and will meet Alexander Zverev in the final (live on DAZN).

The altitude, the familiar ambience: during the tournament days in Munich, Philipp Kohlschreiber repeatedly emphasized how well the traditional event suits him. For Marterer, however, everything was new: first semi-final on the ATP tour, first on the court against Philipp Kohlschreiber. The latter is not necessarily a disadvantage – after all, torture can take on most players as an even stranger. Kohlschreiber, however, knows the left-hander from the joint training sessions at the tennis base in Oberhaching down to the last detail, there were no surprises on either side.

Torturer kept up well until 2-2 in the first set, then Kohlschreiber unpacked his whole routine, especially on the court he knows better than almost anyone else on the tour. Round one lasted only 27 minutes, Kohlschreiber did not allow a single breakchance, even taking advantage of two of them.

The same picture in the second movement: Kohlschreiber strikes again in the fifth game, again he leaves the recoiled torturer no chance of a comeback. And again the break to 5:2, but then a small change in the script: Marterer actually took two break chances, exploited the second. And shortened to 4:5. But then Kohlschreiber served to zero. 6:2, 6:4 after 65 minutes.

In the final, they will face Alexander Zverev, who beat Hyeon Chung for the first time in the first semi-final of the day.

Kohlschreiber and Zverev have recently spent an intensive week in Valencia – with a bitter end for de Davis Cup players. The German team had entered Sunday with a 2-1 lead, then Alexander Zverev had little to report against Rafael Nadal, Kohlschreiber in turn lost to David Ferrer in an epic 5:7 in the fifth set.

Things were similarly exciting between the two Munich finalists at the US Open 2016 – however, Kohlschreiber prevailed over the full distance against Zverev. As in the same year in Munich. Alexander Zverev clinched his only victory against Philipp Kohlschreiber last year in Halle/Westphalia.
