WTA: Two winners with a view of Singapore

Their success at smaller tournaments has had positive effects for Petra Kvitova and Elise Mertens.

Of course: It is only a Grand Slam tournament played in 2018, many WTA points are still to be distributed. In last week’s Porsche Race to Singapore, however, the tournament winners underlined their expectations for a place in the final: Petra Kvitova, who won the title in Prague, climbed from sixth to fourth, and also made up two places Elise Mertesn, who is now the new sixth.

The Belgian, semi-finalist in Melbourne, had won the tournament in Rabat. Caroline Wozniacki leads the annual standings ahead of Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber. While Halep and Wozniacki are fighting for more points in Madrid, double Grand Slam winner Kerber has to take a break this week and will not return to the WTA tour until Rome at the earliest.

By the way, Garbine Muguruza, after all the ruling Wimbledon winner, would not have a place in Singapore at the moment.

In the “regular” WTA World Ranking Kerber is also ahead of Julia Görges in eleventh place. These charts are led by Halep before Wozniacki. Third-best German is Carina Witthöft in 59th place.

From an Austrian point of view, however, one has to search for a long time: Barbara Haas only ranks 201st in the current world rankings.
