ATP: Alexander Zverev achieves a successful late-night finish in Madrid

Alexander Zverev reached the round of 16 at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid just in time for Father’s Day. Evgeny Donkoy was beaten by the third in the world ranking 6:2, 7:5.

“No matter what time I play, I have to go out and do my thing,” Zverev said after the match at Sky.

Shortly after midnight, the night shift was over: Zverev took 1’15” to enter the final 16 after a commanding two-set win over Federer shock Evgeny Donskoy.

Donskoy made headlines last year when he caused a surprising defeat to the “Maestro” in his adopted country Dubai. However, Donskoy was denied another career highlight against the 21-year-old from Hamburg. Zverev, in second place in Spain’s capital city, followed his favourite role from the start.

The break to the 1-0 could refine Zverev at the score of 5:2. Afterwards, the two-time winner from Munich served out relaxed. Donskoy held his forehand better in the second set. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old had to give up his serve at 5:5. In a match with mostly short rallies, “Sascha” made the second victory in the second comparison with the Russian perfect.

For Germany’s number one, the game will continue this Thursday: Zverev wants to play Leonardo Mayer again. It’s the first duel with the Argentinean.
