ATP Madrid: Alexander Peya in the double final against the Bryan brothers
Alexander Peya and his partner Nikola Mektic have reached the final of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament. In the final Peya and Mektic meet brothers Bob and Mike Bryan.
Alexander Peya and doubles partner Nikola Mektic delivered the next thriller after winning the quarter-finals the day before.
Against the top Colombian doubles Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, the Croatian-Austrian double took the lead in the first round with 6:3. A break to 5:3 was enough for Peya/Mektic to win the set.
However, Cabal and Farah did not get up and fought their way back into the game. In a high-class match, a break was enough for the Colombians to win the second set. The Australian Open finalists equalled the sets with 6:3.
The decision was made again in the match tiebreak. Already in the fourth final Peya and Mektic had to go the full distance and prevailed again this time. Three times Peya/Mektic broke the Colombians’ serve and celebrated an acclaimed 10:3 in the match tiebreak and thus the final in Madrid.
The legendary Bryan Brothers double from the USA is now waiting for the Austrian and the Croatian. The French duo Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues finished the double legends with 6:1 and 7:6 (2).
With the victory, Bob and Mike Bryan continue their record hunt and play for the 119th (Mike) almost 117th double title (Bob) of their career. The 40-year-old twins have already triumphed at the Masters tournaments in Miami and Monte Carlo this year.
