ATP: Peter Gojowczyk failed in Rome round of 16

Davis Cup player Peter Gojowczyk from Munich has missed another surprise after his first appearance in the round of 16 of a Masters tournament.

The 28-year-old defeated Italian Fabio Fognini 4:6, 4:6 in the round of the last 16 players at Foro Italico in Rome.

Gojowczyk, however, had the consolation after his defeat against the favourite that his two victories in the “eternal city” on Monday will put him in the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time as number 49. “I train hard, and success will come at some point,” said the 28-year-old after his move into the round of 16.

Gojo” was one break ahead in the first set against World Ranking-21st Fognini, who had previously eliminated sixth seeded Madrid finalist Dominic Thiem (Austria). Gojowczyk then lost 4:4 and 4:6 in the second round and then lost his service to the decisive 4:6.

After his retirement, title defender Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) and Philipp Kohlschreiber (Augsburg) are still in the race in Rome from a German perspective. In the last endurance test before the French Open in Paris (from 27 May) Zverev will meet the British Kyle Edmund, Kohlschreiber will also play Kei Nishikori from Japan on Thursday.
