ATP: Thiem in Lyon, Wawrinka in Geneva for the final Paris fine-tuning

After the two ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Rome, there are two smaller events ahead of the French Open. Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka use these opportunities.

In 2017 Dominic Thiem broke with a small, fine tradition: The Austrian number one had taken the week before the French Open off, not like in the years before when Thiem won the title twice in Nice. This year it goes back to the roots, also due to the early defeat of the Lichtenwörther against Fabio Fognini in Rome. Thiem enters the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Lyon as number one. After a walk-through, he will face either a qualifier or Roberto Carballes Baena from Spain.

The next step would probably be Adrian Mannarino in the quarter-finals and Jack Sock in the semi-finals.

John Isner will start in second place, next to Thiem the second top ten man in the field. Hyeon Chung also tries his hand in the 28er field of Lyon.

From a German perspective, only Maximilian Marterer can be found in the main field. After reaching the semi-finals in Munich, the Franconian has given himself the two tournaments in Madrid and Rome as a present and has been given an attractive task in Lyon as a prelude: Marterer plays against Gael Monfils. He was at the start in Rome, but lost in round one against Fabio Fognini.

The Italian, in turn, named Sam Querreg for Geneva, is in second place. The good news for all Swiss tennis fans is that the organizers have still reached an agreement with Stan Wawrinka about his participation. Wawrinka urgently needs practice before the French Open – after all, he has to defend a place in the final in Roland Garros.
