ATP: Mayer and Haider-Maurer lose in Geneva, torturer defeats Monfils in Lyon

Shortly before the French Open, the ATP stars are still working on their form and are getting the finishing touches for the showdown in Paris in Geneva and Lyon.

The times for Florian Mayer don’t seem to be getting any better. In his opening game in Geneva, the German had to admit defeat to the Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles in two sets.

After less than an hour it was 3:6 and 2:6 on the scoreboard in Switzerland and Mayer had to pack his bags again early.

The guy from Bayreuth seems to have big problems on your farewell tour. Last year’s Hamburg finalist recently announced that after this year’s US Open he would hang up his racket and say goodbye to the tennis circus.

The Swiss air was also not good for the Austrian representative Andreas Haider-Maurer. He lost 6:1, 1:6 and 0:6 against the American Tennys Sandgren and also has to leave after the first round.

Things went better for Peter Gojowczyk in Geneva. “Gojo” had to deal with service giant Ivo Karlovic and showed strong nerves, especially in the decisive situations.

With two won tiebreaks and a tight 7:6, (4) 4:6 and 7:6 (1) the German is in the next round.

The young German Maximilian Marterer, on the other hand, celebrated a great success. In the first round in Lyon, France, the Munich semi-finalist met local hero and audience favourite Gael Monfils.

Torterer was 2:6 behind, but did not get up and fought his way back into the game. With a tight 6:4 the left-hander managed the equaliser and quickly played his way into the third round with 4:0 in front.

In the end, Marterer won against the better Frenchman with a tight 6:4 in set three.
