WTA: Barthel is the only German in Nuremberg’s round of 16

Only Mona Barthel made it into the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Nuremberg. Andrea Petkovic has retired after a thriller against Sorana Cirstea.

Mona Barthel (Neumünster) is the only German to reach the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Nuremberg. The 27-year-old won the duel between the former Fed Cup players and Carina Witthöft from Hamburg, which was interrupted on Monday evening after the first set, 7-5, 6-3, Barthel’s next opponent in the final test before the French Open from Sunday in Paris is defending champion Kiki Bertens (Netherlands/No. 3).

Meanwhile, Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) retired after a strong start with two lost tiebreaks against sixth seeded Romania Sorana Cirstea. The wild card starter lost 6:2, 6:7 (3:7), 6:7 (5:7) in the $250,000 tournament.

Of the six German players in the main draw, three had already failed in the first round on Monday. The German top player Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) was unexpectedly knocked out.
