French Open: Carina Witthöft takes next first-round bankruptcy in Paris

Carina Witthöft (Hamburg) is the third German tennis player to be eliminated in the first round at the French Open in Paris. The 23-year-old from Hamburg lost to French wildcard starter Fiona Ferro 4:6, 2:6 on Tuesday.

It was Witthöft’s ninth opening bankruptcy at eleven Grand Slam, WTA and Challenger tournaments in 2018.

Witthöft, currently number 61 in the world rankings, had acted extremely wrongly against the local heroine, who was ranked 257. Even after a one-hour rain break, the former Fed Cup player could not find her way into the track and had to admit defeat after 1:27 hours of play. Last year Witthöft had reached the third round in Paris.

Of the seven German women in Roland Garros, only Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) has reached the second round so far. There she will meet Bethanie Mattek-Sands from the USA, who specializes mainly in doubles.

Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) and Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) retired on Monday. The two German top players Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe/No. 11) and Angelique Kerber (Kiel/No. 12) will start into the tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
