French Open: Peter Gojowczyk receives 25,000 Euro penalty after abandonment in round 1

Peter Gojowczyk has to pay 25,000 euros in his first round match.

This was reported by the journalist René Stauffer of Schweizer Tages-Anzeiger.

Gojowczyk lost 6-1, 2-0 against British player Cameron Norrie due to hip problems. He should have given his place to a lucky loser, judged the ITF.

After eight pros were injured in round one at the 2017 Wimbledon tournament (but many competed to take their first round prize money of around 40,000 euros), the rule was introduced at the Australian Open that injured players who withdraw before their match receive half their fee – and Lucky Loser, who plays for them, the other half.

Eight lucky losers were in the field at this year’s French Open, probably as a result of this regulation. Especially the story about the road trip of the Argentinian Marco Trungelliti caused a sensation.
