ATP: Kyrgios calls swimming star Fraser a racist
Australia’s tennis pro Nick Kyrgios has once again described swimming legend Dawn Fraser as a “racist” after her tribute by Queen Elizabeth II. Four-time Olympic champion Fraser was honoured by the Queen as a member of the Australian Order for her services to sport.
“I’m so grateful that I’m Australian and I got this honour, it’s just fantastic,” the 80-year-old told TV station Australia Channel Seven, who twittered it. Kyrgios replied immediately with the tweet: “But racist.”
The dispute between the two had broken out in 2015 after Kyrgios was assumed to have given himself up in a match in Wimbledon. At that time, he had failed in the round of 16 due to the Frenchman Richard Gasquet. Kyrgios reacted to this insinuation with sneering comments.
Fraser described this behaviour at the time as “absolutely disgusting” and suggested that he “go back to where his parents came from”. His father is Greek, his mother Malaysian. Even then, Kyrgios described Fraser as a “blatant racist”.
