ATP: Stuttgart: Torture fourth German player in the round of 16

Maximilian Marterer is the fourth German player to reach the round of 16 at the ATP tournament in Stuttgart. The 22-year-old from Nuremberg won 3:6, 6:4, 6:1 against Lucky Loser Viktor Galovic from Croatia on Wednesday at the start of the grass court season.

In the round of the last 16, Torterer will meet Nick Kyrgios from Australia. On Tuesday, the match fell victim to hours of rain and on Wednesday, due to the still wet lawn on the Centre Court, it could only begin with a considerable delay.

At the French Open, the world ranking-50th Torterer failed only in the round of 16 due to the later winner Rafael Nadal. In the duel with Galovic, number 180 in the ATP ranking, the Franconian could only use his seventh Brealball – and thus won the second round. After that, Torterer lived up to his favourite position on the Centre Court and finished the match after almost 1:35 hours.

The 17-year-old talent Rudolf Molleker (Berlin), Mischa Zverev (Hamburg) and Oldie Florian Mayer (Bayreuth) had already won their opening matches on Monday.

In the afternoon, Zverev will meet the top-seeded Roger Federer, who returns to the tour after a break of two and a half months. After his first victory on the ATP Tour, the world ranking 303rd Molleker has to deal with the second seeded title defender Lucas Pouille from France. Mayer will meet Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan, who had previously beaten Philipp Kohlschreiber (Augsburg).

Denis Shapovalov, a Canadian in sixth place, has already been eliminated. The world ranked 23rd in his opening game, Prajnesh Gunneswaran from India surprisingly lost 6:7 (6:8), 6:2, 3:6 in 1:49 hours. 169 in the ranking had never won a game in the main field of an ATP tournament before.
