ATP: A new streaming era begins with the tournament at Queen´s Club
Amazon Prime is a new big player on the streaming market in Great Britain – from the tournament in London’s Queen´s Club also in tennis.
Jeff Bezos has been known for years to think big. This has made Bezos, the founder of Amazon, one of the richest people in the world. Amazon thus has the means to open up new business fields – including the purchase and use of sports rights.
In Germany, for example, the German Soccer League can be followed as an audio live stream via Amazon. In the UK, the Seattle-based company is already one step ahead: firstly, last month Amazon secured streaming rights to 20 matches in the English Premier League.
In April it was announced that in addition to the 38 annual ATP World Tour tournaments (including all Masters 1000 events), Amazon will also broadcast the US Open. In Germany, the streaming rights are currently held by the TV providers: Eurosport accompanies the tournaments in Melbourne, Paris and New York City with its player, SKY Go shows the matches from Wimbledon.
The start into the Amazon tennis era will take place next Monday with the ATP World Tour 500 tournament at London’s Queen´s Club. The prerequisites for this to be a success are not bad. Even if Rafael Nadal withdrew his nomination at short notice. With the next comeback attempt by Andy Murray and the participation of Novak Djokovic there are however several interesting stories around the traditional event.
