MercedesCup: Petzschner/Pütz win – but is there a sequel?
Philipp Petzschner and Tim Pütz won their first joint double title at the MercedesCup.
by Florian Goosmann from Stuttgart
In the final Petzschner/Pütz won against Robert Lindstedt and Marcin Matkowski 7:6 (7:5), 6:3, the first title ever on the ATP tour for Pütz and the eighth for the double Wimbledon-Doppelchamp Petzschner.
“We both knew we were very good at playing. But to do this on this level… It may not be surprising, but we didn’t come here knowing it would happen,” Pütz said afterwards.
Are Petzschner and Pütz a duo with a future? At least not next week in Halle. “Everyone always wants Tim and Struffi, so I give them the bigger weeks,” joked Petzschner, who will compete with Philipp Kohlschreiber in Halle, while Pütz will start with Struff. “They have agreed this for a long time, will play together again and again for a few weeks, just as I will play again and again for a few weeks with my Austrian friends. But it’s a very good commitment for both of us, we don’t have to run side by side every week and none of us have a problem with that,” Petzschner continues.
And according to Petzschner, there are at least rough plans. “The pairing of Petzschner/Pütz will still be seen in the future.”
