WTA: Kvitova defends her position, tournament winner Maria among the Top 50
Tatjana Maria has improved after her victory at the WTA tournament in Mallorca among the Top 50, Petra Kvitova underlined her favourite position for Wimbledon with the success in Birmingham.
An improvement of 31 places was worth the first tournament victory of Tatjana Maria in the WTA World Ranking – the second triumphator of the weekend, Petra Kvitova, defended with her title in Birmingham only eighth place in the WTA World Ranking. But the fifth tournament victory in 2018 underscored their expectation of a third success in Wimbledon.
Tatjana Maria, on the other hand, goes to London after the coup from Mallorca with a good feeling, without aspirations to win the tournament of course. Now number 48 on the WTA charts, 30-year-old Maria is clearly the third force in German tennis behind Angelique Kerber (number eleven) and Julia Görges (13). Kerber and Görges are competing in Eastbourne this week.
In the Porsche Singles Race to Singapore, however, Kerber is in a good position as fifth, led by Simona Halep, who is also at the top of the “regular” WTA world rankings.
