Wimbledon: Gerald Melzer misses the main draw
Austria’s number two Gerald Melzer missed the first jump into the main draw of the Wimbledon tournament.
In the second qualifying round of the tournament outsourced to Roehampton, Gerald Melzer surprisingly lost to the German underdog Dominik Köpfer (ATP No. 239) in the left-handed duel with 6:2, 4:6, 2:6.
The preliminary decision was made when Melzer (27) had to give up his serve for 2-0 in the third set and then lost his match loss service for the second time. The starting position for the Davis Cup player was good.
If Gerald Melzer had only failed in the third qualifying round, he would still have had a good chance to come into the main field as Lucky Loser in the case of some cancellations. At the French Open, six qualifying losers were ultimately eligible.
Prior to that, his brother Jürgen Melzer (37) had qualified for the third round of the world’s most important grass court tournament. Barbara Haas was also victorious on Tuesday.
