Wimbledon: Serena Williams placed in position 25

23-time major winner Serena Williams is ranked 25th at the upcoming Grand Slam tournament in the grass Mecca of Wimbledon (July 2 to 15) despite her world rankings position 183.

This was announced by the organizers on Wednesday. The 36-year-old American has fallen far behind in the ranking due to her 13-month baby break. She was therefore not among the 32 seeded players at the French Open.

The men’s title defender Roger Federer leads the field, although he had to relinquish his lead in the world rankings earlier this week to permanent rivals Rafael Nadal (Spain). Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) is in fourth place behind last year’s finalist Marin Cilic, the German number two Philipp Kohlschreiber (Augsburg) in 27th place.

Dominic Thiem follows in eighth place, Novak Djokovic in twelfth place.

Among the women, the former Wimbledon finalist Angelique Kerber (Kiel/No. 11) and Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe/No. 13) are on the seed list from a German perspective. Simona Halep in front of Caroline Wozniacki is in the lead.

Unlike the three other Grand Slam events in Paris, Melbourne and New York, the tournament organisers in Wimbledon do not base their seedings solely on the world ranking list, but reserve the right to make changes. This is done according to a fixed formula for men and at the discretion of the tournament management for women.

Before the French Open at the end of May, Williams had discussed whether a special rule should generally be introduced for players returning from pregnancy.
