Wimbledon: Ex-finalist waiting for Kerber – Görges vs Puig
Angelique Kerber got a very attractive first round ticket at the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon. The 30-year-old will face the Russian Vera Zvonareva in a duel between two former finalists. Julia Görges also has an interesting opening hurdle to overcome against Olympic champion Monica Puig (Puerto Rico).
Kerber’s opponent is no longer in the same class as her biggest success in 2010 and had only returned to the tennis tour in 2017 after her career ended in the meantime.
Top favourite for the title is Czech Petra Kvitova, who has already won five tournaments this year. The double Wimbledon winner will meet Alina Sasnovich from Belarus at the beginning. World number one Simona Halep will play Kurumi Nara, Austalian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki will start against Varvara Lepchenko from the USA.
US superstar Serena Williams, who, unlike at the French Open, was last placed 25th despite her poor world ranking after her baby break, will first face Arantxa Rus (Netherlands). Last year’s winner Garbine Muguruza has to win against local hero Naomi Broady.
Austrian didn’t make it into the main field. Barbara Haas failed in the qualification final.
