Wimbledon: Alexander Zverev with big goal: “Wants to win the title sometime”
Despite his suboptimal preparation, Germany’s hopeful Alexander Zverev is going into the turf classic in Wimbledon (July 2 to 15) with great ambitions.
“My goal is to win this tournament someday. Whether it’s this year, next year or a few years from now,” said the 21-year-old, “I’m not someone who says the quarter-finals or semi-finals are good enough. Last year Zverev had made it into the fourth round, but Milos Raonic lost in five sets.
Zverev is not worried about his thigh injury in the quarter-finals of the French Open in early June. “I feel good,” said the fourth seeded hamburger, who will face Australian James Duckworth in round one on Tuesday. An MRI examination in London confirmed once again that the four-centimeter-long muscle tear has completely healed.
Zverev therefore did not want to overestimate his unexpected first-round finish at the ATP tournament in Halle against the later champion Borna Coric and the resulting lack of preparation matches on grass. “I played in Halle without any training,” explained the third in the world rankings: “But the last units were really good. I’m ready.”
During the last week Zverev was once at the show fight event “The Boodles”, the Hamburg native left a sovereign impression in the match against Pablo Carreno Busta. In Halle Zverev and his brother Mischa had reached the final in doubles. Mischa celebrated his first individual success on the ATP tour in Eastbourne.
