Maximilian Marterer (Nuremberg) retired in the first round of his Wimbledon debut. The 22-year-old was without a chance against number 27 seeded Bosnian Damir Dzumhur on Tuesday and lost 3:6, 2:6, 4:6 in just 1:34 hours. 2018 Wimbledon tournament is also over for Peter Gojowczyk.
The 28-year-old Gojowczyk lost to Juan Martin del Potro, fourth in the Argentinian world rankings, 3:6, 4:6, 3:6, Gojowczyk’s tenth Grand Slam appearance was his sixth first-round defeat.
Torterer and Gojowczyk were fourth and fifth out of a total of eight German players to intervene in the turf classic in South London. The day before Philipp Kohlschreiber (Augsburg/No. 25) and Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) had entered the second round, but qualifier Yannick Maden (Stuttgart) was eliminated.
Torterer, ranked among the world’s top 50 for the first time in his career as number 48 in Paris, was in Wimbledon’s main field for the first time. Last year, the Franconian had failed in the first round of qualifying. Now he has played at least one match in each of the four major tournaments of the year.
