Wimbledon: Does Sam Querrey stand a chance of winning the title?

Sam Querrey got off to a good start in the 2018 Wimbledon tournament. The American has established himself as a horror for defending champions in recent years.

On the website of the ATP you could read a nice story these days: Sam Querrey told of his entry into the great travelling circus, especially a meeting at the Australian Open 2007, where a somewhat more experienced player in the changing room greeted him very warmly, saying: “Hi, Sam. I’m Roger. Good luck with your career.”

At that time, the same Roger Federer was already multiple Grand Slam champion, Querrey a rookie who still had a lot to learn.

Should the 30-year-old American and the 36-year-old Swiss meet in Wimbledon, however, this encounter would take place under completely different circumstances, not only because Sam Querrey has played his way to the top ten of the world rankings.

Two matches have yet to be won by Federer and Querrey, which would lead to the quarter-final match in which the man from San Francisco could make history: Namely as the player who kicked a defending champion out of the tableau in Wimbledon for the third time in a row.

In 2016 Querrey succeeded against Novak Djokovic on Court 1, last year against Andy Murray on the Centre Court. Querrey is always aware of this series, as is Roger Federer, the maestro knows about the dangers that the American brings to the court.

That is first and foremost his peace. Querrey prepared himself last week at The Boodles, convinced in a playful way, but also in an on-court interview: The interested presenter asked after each match about the status of the young marriage, Querrey could always give auf´s New all-clear: It’s all good. What could go wrong after two weeks of married life?

The tasks Querrey has to master before a potential match against Federer, however, seem more difficult than those of the Swiss: Gael Monfils is not considered a friend of the pitch, but in a good mood the Frenchman can torture almost any opponent (Friday, 2 pm, Centre Court, live on SKY and in our LIVE SCORES). And against Kevin Anderson (if he beat Philipp Kohlschreiber) Querrey went down in the quarter-finals of the US Open in 2017.

So there is still a lot to do if Sam Querrey wants to make history in Wimbledon 2018.
