ATP: Cecchinato’s Umg triumph rounds off perfect Italian day
Second tournament victory for Marco Cecchinato. The Italian won the final of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Umag against Guido Pella in two sets.
Marco Cecchinato crowned an extremely successful Italian sports day in Umag, Croatia: After Fabio Fognini won the tournament in Bastad and golfer Francesco Molinari triumphed at The Open in Carnoustie in the afternoon, Cecchinato beat Argentinian Guido Pella 6:2 and 7:6 (4) in the final of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament.
It was Cecchinato’s second tournament victory of the year. In spring, the 25-year-old celebrated his premiere as champion in Budapest, under dramatic circumstances: After all, Cecchinato came into the main field as Lucky Loser.
In Umag, on the other hand, the French Open semi-finalist entered the race in third place, making his first exclamation mark early on with a 3-1 break. On the way to the final Pella had to play one match and four sets more than his opponent, but did not make a comeback in round one. Cecchinato tried it again and again with stop balls, secured the first set with another break.
In the second act, Pella presented the break for 3:2, but had to accept the equaliser for 4:4. In the decisive tiebreak, Cecchinato left no doubt about the winner, leading quickly 4-0 – and after a forehand volley, which Pella put into the net, was allowed to sink into the Croatian sand with relief.
