ATP: Jürgen Melzer fails in Hamburg-qualification by a hair’s breadth
Jürgen Melzer failed in the second qualifying round for the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Hamburg. After leading the Austrian number one of many years, Nikoloz Basilashvili lost in just three sets.
Only one service game was missing for Jürgen Melzer – but at 5-4 for the Austrian Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia in the third set. Like the following two games – which resulted in 6:4, 4:6 and 7:5 for Basilahsvili after 2:13 hours.
A pity, of course, from Melzer’s point of view, who had already missed a match point against Yannick Maden in the qualifying final in Wimbledon.
In doubles Melzer will start in the Hanseatic city with Dominic Thiem. The two Austrians will face Jan-Lennard Struff and his Japanese partner Ben Mclachlan in round one. Melzer’s long-time partner, Philipp Petzschner, with whom he played last week in Bastad, will compete in Hamburg with Tim Pütz.
