Forza, Fabio! Fognini wins seventh career title in Bastad
Fabio Fognini has won the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Bastad: the 31-year-old Italian defeated Richard Gasquet in three sets and won his seventh title on the tour.
The month of July is Fabio Fognini. As in 2016 (in Umag) and last year (in Gstaad), the Italian won a summer title in 2018 – this time at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Bastad. Fognini defeated Richard Gasquet 6:3, 3:6 in the final and celebrated his seventh individual championship on the ATP tour.
After the confidently won first set, Fognini suddenly had problems with his serve – and gave his opponent the decisive break in the second set with three double errors. In the decisive set, however, it was Franco Davin’s protégé who got off to the better start. After the 2-0 break, Fognini did not allow anything more with his own service, even took Gasquet’s serve for 5:1 and served after 1:47 hours – with his fourth match point. And after Fognini had to fend off another Gasquet break point.
Gasquet already had two big problems in round two: Against Gerald Melzer the experienced Frenchman was trailing 1:6 and 3:6, but still managed a comeback. Fognini, on the other hand, delivered a marathon with Fernando Verdasco in the semi-final, which the Italian finally won 7-5 in the third set.
It was Fabio Fognini’s second title of the current season: at the beginning of the year, the 31-year-old had won the 250cc event in Sao Paolo.
