ATP: Kohlschreiber and Struff miss Hamburg round of 16
Experienced Philipp Kohlschreiber has surprisingly missed the round of 16 at the German Open at Rothenbaum in Hamburg. The 34 year old Augsburger lost against the Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili 5:7, 6:1, 4:6.
Warsteiner Jan-Lennard Struff also dropped out: The German Davis Cup player lost to Australian John Millman after 93 minutes 5:7 and 3:6, Millman could face tournament favourite Dominic Thiem in round two, against whom he only just lost on Sunday in the German national tennis league.
Kohlschreiber, on the other hand, started his match well, but had to give up the first heat with 5:7. After that, the man from Augsburg gained control of his opponent and was never at risk in the second round. After just over two hours, however, it was the Georgian qualifier who entered the second round.
A disappointment for Kohlschreiber: Last year, Germany’s long-time number one reached the semi-finals and had to give up against Florian Mayer.
Already on Monday the two youngsters Daniel Masur from Bückeburg and Rudolf Molleker from Berlin qualified for the last 16 rounds.
