ATP: Clutch player Chung makes a solid comeback in Atlanta

Hyeon Chung has returned to the ATP tour with a win: The South Korean defeated the American Taylor Fritz in two sets at the 250cc event in Atlanta.

Between Milan and Melbourne everything was still in order for Hyeon Chung: The South Korean had won the first edition of the #NextGen-Master in the Bord-Italian metropolis and reached the semi-finals of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. But there Chung had to give up against Roger Federer after one set.

At the big US hard court tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami Chung made it into the last eight twice, but since then the Werkel doesn’t run smoothly anymore: The current number 23 of the world put on the last appearance on the ATP tour in Madrid, but only won two games against Robin Haase there.

The 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over Taylor Fritz at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament was a remarkable re-entry into the tennis circus. Chung is in third place at the hard court tournament in the state of Georgia, Ryan Harrison is now waiting in the quarter-finals.

In the match against Fritz, Chung showed again that he is one of the players who plays best under pressure. A statistic of the ATP, which records the use and defense of match balls, won tiebreaks and decision sets, even puts Hyeon Chung at the top of all ATP Tour players.

However, this has not yet earned the 22-year-old a title in the adult sector. The competition in Atlanta is fierce: In the semi-final, Chung Nick Kyrgios could be waiting for him, tournament favourite from the top half is John Isner. The Wimbledon semi-finalist first has to overcome the hurdle of Mischa Zverev in the quarter-finals – Isner has failed on the last three occasions, most recently at the US Open 2017.
