ATP Hamburg: ATP Hamburg: Dominic Thiem loses against Underdog and misses semi-final

Dominic Thiem surprisingly dropped out of the ATP tournament in Hamburg against Nicolas Jarry. In two sets, the tournament favourite at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum lost 6:7 (5) and 6:7 (7).

The tall Chilean Nicolas Jarry made it clear to his favourite opponent right from the start that he would not admit defeat without a fight.

Tournament favourite Thiem had with the serve of his young and lively opponent and came under pressure again and again due to the strong forehand of the 22-year-old. At the beginning of the first set, the Lower Austrian stood up to this and played his class on the red ashes.

A break for a quick 2:1 lead should give Thiem the necessary confidence in the game. Jarry, however, did not let up and saw his chance when Thiem served to the set win. The Chilean played aggressively and was rewarded with a break and a 5-5 equaliser. The decision in round one should be made in the tiebreak.

Thiem got off to a better start and took the lead with a mini-break to 4:2. Again the nerves seemed to flutter at the Lichtenwörther and Jarry grabbed four points in a row and finally the first run with 7:5 in the tiebreak.

Also the second round should not have anything good in store for Thiem at first. The first service game of the top seed went to the underdog. Theim, however, did not give up and won the immediate re-break for 1:1 with more certainty in the basic strokes.

After two new breaks, which the players shared, Thiem and Jarry found their way back into the service games. Thiem wobbled at 5:5 on his own serve and had to go over debut. However, the 24-year-old took the lead at 6-5 with two crushing winners and Jarry remained cool and the tiebreak decision was sought again.

And again it was Thiem who made the better start. Jarry seemed physically exhausted and Thiem took the lead 4:2. Thiem won three set points and took the lead 6:3. Jarry played bravely to the front with great tennis at 6-6 and then Jarry had his first chance at the first top-10 win of his career, but that destroyed Thiem.

However, the Chilean won the second match point and caused great disillusionment for Thiem and his team with 7:6 (5) and 7:6 (7).
