WTA: First title in Moscow – Olga Danilovic wins 17-year-old fight
The WTA tour has a new winning face: Serbian Olga Danilovic won her first title at the highest professional level against Anastasia Potapova from Russia in Moscow in the final of two 17-year-olds.
So close to the first tournament victory on the WTA Tour, and in front of a home crowd – and then it was nothing for Anastasia Potapova: 4:3 and 40:15 had led the 17-year-old Russian against her peer Olga Danilovic in the Moscow River Cup final. And had to admit defeat after 2:19 hours with 5:7, 7:6 (1) and 4:6.
The Serb, who had already lost in qualifying, scored 280 points. And then slip into the main field as Lucky Loser. Danilovic has made the most of this second chance, beating Kaia Kanepi, Julia Görges and Aliaksandra Sasnovich three seeded players on their way to tournament victory.
The reward: 280 points for the WTA World Ranking, in which Danilovic will appear on position 112 from Monday. Anastasia Potapova will improve to 134th place.
Incidentally, the Serb was born with sporting success: Father Pedrag Danilovic was a member of the Yugoslavian basketball Olympic team in 1996 and won the silver medal in Atlanta.
