ATP: Financing problems: Tournament must cancel sail
The ATP tournament in Quito will not take place next year. The organisers had to pay tribute to the tense economic situation in Ecuador and were unable to raise sufficient funds for the event.
The sand court tournament was held for four years in Ecuador’s capital city at an altitude of around 3,000 meters. Despite the surface, it was one of the fastest tournaments on the calendar.
In the week from February 4 to 10, another location is to take over the license, but it is still unclear which one. The same week will see the indoor tournaments in Montpellier and Sofia, and the qualifying round for the newly reformed Davis Cup will take place a week earlier.
It should be clear that the tournament will remain on the American continent. The most likely successors to Quito are Santiago de Chile or a metropolis in Uruguay. A smaller tournament on a Canadian hard court is also circulated.
“In the last two years, the organizers of the Ecuador Open have done an outstanding job to get the necessary resources up and running,” the organizers announced in a broadcast.
Due to the lack of support and the economic situation in the country, we have to announce that the tournament will no longer take place in Ecuador.
