US Open: Kohlschreiber wins German duel with Hanfmann
Experienced Philipp Kohlschreiber has won the German duel at the US Open against Yannick Hanfmann from Karlsruhe and reached the second round of the Grand Slam tournament in New York. The 34 year old from Augsburg prevailed over his eight year younger colleague 7:6 (7:3), 5:7, 6:4, 6:4.
After Alexander Zverev (Hamburg/No. 4) and Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) Kohlschreiber is the third German in the men’s singles to win his opening match in Flushing Meadows. On the other hand, qualifier Yannick Maden (Stuttgart) lost 6:7 (6:8), 2:6, 5:7 against Lucas Pouille (France/No. 17) in the US Open main draw on Tuesday.
Kohlschreiber, number 34 in the world rankings, reached the round of 16 in New York last year, equalizing his best result at the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. In 2012, 2013 and 2014, the long-time Davis Cup player was also among the top 16 in Flushing Meadows.
