US Open: Maximilian Marterer against Kei Nishikori without a chance

Maximilian Marterer is out of the US Open: The German Davis Cup player lost to Kei Nishikori in three sets.

Qualifier Yannick Maden (Stuttgart) and Maximilian Marterer (Nuremberg) lost their first round games on Tuesday. Maden lost to Lucas Pouille (France/No. 17) 6:7 (6:8), 2:6, 5:7 at his US Open premiere against former finalist Kei Nishikori (Japan/No. 21) at 2:6, 2:6, 3:6.

Experienced Philipp Kohlschreiber has won the German duel at the US Open against Yannick Hanfmann from Karlsruhe and reached the second round of the Grand Slam tournament in New York. The 34 year old from Augsburg prevailed over his eight year younger colleague 7:6 (7:3), 5:7, 6:4, 6:4. On Thursday he will meet the Australian Matthew Ebden.

After Alexander Zverev (Hamburg/No. 4) and Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) Kohlschreiber was the third and last German in the men’s singles to win his opening match in Flushing Meadows. Nine DTB professionals qualified for the main field.
