US Open: After coaching scandal: Mohamed Lahyani may continue

The US Open reacted to the incident of Mohamed Lahyani in the match between Nick Kyrgios and Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The Swede may continue to serve as chair referee in New York, but should adhere more closely to the protocol.

After a listless performance of Kyrgio, Lahyani came from his chair to cheer the Australian up. “I want to help you,” Lahyani said, proactively intervening in what was happening.

Afterwards Kyrgios showed himself from a better side, fought back in the second set and won a duel with Roger Federer in four sets.

Those responsible for the US Open published a press release on Friday in which Lahyani is supported. Here is the statement in its wording:

“After an extensive investigation of the officials of the US Open with tournament director David Brewer, tournament referee Brian Earley and others, the US Open came to the conclusion that chair referee Mohamed Lahyani in his match between Nick Kyrgios and Pierre-Hugues Herbert did not follow the protocol. Lahyani was asked to follow the minutes more closely in all the matches he will watch.

Lahyani will continue to referee the US Open 2018. His performance will continue to be evaluated, as will that of all other referees during the US Open.”
