ATP: Thiem and Struff on collision course in St. Petersburg

Dominic Thiem and Jan-Lennard Struff are the only two German-speaking participants in the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in St. Petersburg.

Back on the ATP tour: After the Davis Cup weekend in Graz in St. Petersburg, Dominic Thiem prepares for the autumn. The Lower Austrian is in first place in Russia, followed by Fabio Fognini and Marco Cecchinato. For Thiem, the most important thing is to further stabilize his good form – the outcome of the event in St.Petersburg will have no relevance for his world ranking position. Two successes at ATP World Tour 250 tournaments (in Buenos Aires and Lyon) are already in the books there, and Dominic Thiem must score points at events with higher prize money.

However, the 25-year-old from Lichtenwörth is fighting for his third consecutive entry into the season finale in London’s O2 Arena. At the moment Thiem is in eighth position in the “Race”, so he would be qualified. John Isner, however, is only 435 points behind Thiem.

Besides the Austrian, Jan-Lennard Struff will also be competing in St. Petersburg. The Warsteiner starts off with a local hero, Andrey Rublev. Should Struff win out, he would meet Thiem in round two, who enjoys a walk-through.
