WTA: “Golden Henne” for Angie: Kerber awarded audience prize
Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber has been awarded the Audience Award “Golden Hen”.
Actually, December is only the month of the big reckoning. In the truest sense, in the positive sense – of course! Angelique Kerber has experienced this before. In the pre-Christmas period 2016, after her magical dream season with two Grand Slam titles, Olympic silver in Rio and the jump to the top of the world rankings.
There was hardly any honour in Germany at that time where the Kielerin was not awarded with any prize. It will hardly be any different at the end of 2018 either. Kerber, the Wimbledon champion who fulfilled her childhood dream in mid-July in the British Lawn Mecca, will once again be hosting a number of rewarding events at the end of the year.
First and foremost in Baden-Baden, where the athletes of the year are traditionally chosen on 16 December. Kerber knows her way around there: in 2016 she was already at the top of the podium in the Kurhaus.
But the round of honours for the third in the world rankings has already begun in these days. “Angie” won the “Golden Henne”, Germany’s biggest audience award, in the category Sport. In six sections the viewers of MDR and rbb as well as the readers of SuperIllu had voted for the candidates of the 24th edition.
As Kerber was unable to attend the event in Leipzig on Friday evening due to her participation in the Premier Mandatory tournament in Beijing, her moderator Kai Pflaume had already presented the trophy to her before her departure for Asia. Therefore he had visited her during training at her academy in Puszczykowo/Poland.
