ATP: Rankings: Nothing new in the top 30, Tomic and Nishioka improve strongly

After the tournaments in Chengdu and Shenzhen there will be no position changes among the top 30 players. The two tournament winners Bernard Tomic and Yoshihito Nishioka made the biggest jumps.

The absolute top players took a break last week before the tournaments in Beijing and Tokyo and then Shanghai. For David Goffin, the early end in Shenzhen had no negative impact, at least in the world rankings, but the Belgian will be out for the remaining events in Asia due to an arm injury.

Rafael Nadal continues to lead the world ranking. The Spaniard, who will probably not return until the Masters 1000 tournament in Paris, currently still has a lead of almost 2000 points over Roger Federer. In the next two weeks, the 33-year-old will lose 1100 points due to last year’s results.

A great opportunity for Novak Djokovic: The Serbian, currently third in the ranking, has no more points to defend this year and wants to close the 2,315-point gap to Nadal. Somewhat surprisingly, he renounced a wildcard in Beijing. There Juan Martin del Potro (4th) and Alexander Zverev (5th) will be in action. Both are still fighting for a place at the World Tour Finals.

In the regions further down the ATP world rankings, on the other hand, some progress has been made. The tournament victory in Chengdu lifted Bernard Tomic back to the top of the world. The Australian improved by a strong 47 positions to 76th place in the charts.

Yoshihitio Nishioka made an even bigger jump. The Japanese made up 76 places with his tournament victory in Shenzhen and is now 96. His final opponent Pierre-Hugues Herbert was able to work his way up to position 53 with 150 points.

There is good news for all Austrian tennis fans. While Dominc Thiem (this week’s tournament break) remains in seventh place and continues to fight for a place at the year-end finals in London, his brother was able to score points for the world rankings for the first time.

The 18-year-old scored two points in the quarter-finals in Antalya. For Moritz Thiem, however, a small disillusionment followed after this great success. In the qualification for the Futures-30 tournament in Turkey, it set a 6-7 and 2-6 defeat against the Dutchman Ruben Konings.
