WTA/ATP: Görges profits from task; Gojowczyk out in the men’s singles
Julia Görges has reached the round of sixteen in Beijing after a hard fight. In the third movement she profited from a task of her opponent Lesia Tsurenko. Peter Gojowczyk, on the other hand, has to pack his suitcases again for the men.
Görges had to fight against Lesia Tsurenko for a long time, before the 6:4, 4:6 and 2:2, ret. success was determined. The German started like the fire brigade and immediately took the Ukrainian’s serve to 1-0. After that Tsurenko found his way into the game better and even led 4:3. With three wins in a row the German secured the first set.
In the second run, Tsurenko survived a hard-fought service game at 3:3, after which the 29-year-old broke for 5:3. Görges took the immediate re-break after defending four set balls – but it shouldn’t help. Tsurenko took Görges’s serve again and won the second round 6:4.
However, the World Ranking tenth quickly recovered from the shock, scoring the first seven points of the decisive set and taking a 2-0 lead. After the game win to 2:1 Tsurenko then had to take a Medical Time Out due to a back injury.
The Ukrainian was visibly handicapped, but still broke her opponent to 2:2 equalization. But after that she had to give up. Görges could face US Open winner Naomi Osaka in the next round.
On the men’s side, things didn’t go according to plan for German tennis fans. Peter Gojowczyk had to admit defeat to the sixteenth Kyle Edmund after winning the first round with 6:3, 1:6 and 2:6.
In the third round, the Munich player found a break possibility at 2:1, but Edmund was able to fend it off. After that, “Gojo” was no longer awarded a game win. The Zverev brothers start the 500cc tournament on Tuesday. Mischa Zverev meets Filip Krajinovic, while Alexander Zverev faces Roberto Bautista Agut.
