WTA: Rankings: Nerve-wracking battle for Singapore tickets
The fight for places in the WTA final in Singapore could become a real thriller. After the gymnastics victory in Wuhan, Aryna Sabalenka suddenly joins the potential candidates.
The Belarusian improved by nine places due to her victory at the WTA-5-Premier-Event in the “Race to Singapore” and is currently ranked eleventh. In Beijing, the 20-year-old will face Garbine Muguruza from Spain after a walk-through in the first round, who currently holds 16th place and has little chance of participating in the year-end finale.
Karolina Pliskova is currently on the coveted eighth place. After a victory over Samantha Stosur, the Czech is also in the second round of Beijing. Even Kiki Bertens, who was only ten points behind her, was able to clear the opening hurdle in the Chinese capital.
For Caroline Wozniacki, Elina Svitolina (first round from Beijing) and Sloane Stephens it is also a matter of trembling again. The tournament in the Chinese metropolis, which involves 1000 points, could already bring a preliminary decision in the fight for the starting positions.
Simona Halep is still the sovereign leader of the world rankings. The French Open winner, who had to give up in Beijing, is well ahead of Caroline Wozniacki and Angelique Kerber with a lead of almost 2500 points. Naomi Osaka has recently achieved a new career high thanks to her outstanding results: the US Open champion ranks sixth.
Garoline Garcia, on the other hand, has to digest a little burglary. Due to the second round finish in Wuhan, the French rider crashed by four places to eighth place in the world ranking.
