ATP: Bone oedema: David Goffin must end season early

The Belgian David Goffin has to end his season early. It’s a bone edema.

Goffin had recently cancelled his tournament appearances for Tokyo and Shanghai after his opening K.O. as defending champion in Shenzhen against Andy Murray. On Wednesday now, the world ranking eleventh announced via Twitter that he will end his season early.

The pain in the right elbow appeared a few weeks ago and recently got worse, wrote Goffin: “I now have more information about this injury: It’s bone edema. I need at least a month to cure this. So I’m sad to announce that I have to end my season.”

The 27-year-old from Rocourt had reached the round of 16 at the Grand Slams in Paris and New York, but did not win a title in 2018 (2017: two titles). His victory record in 2018 is: 28:16 – in the previous season it was 59:24.

Last year Goffin reached the final of the ATP final in London and lost against Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria). Immediately afterwards, he had won his two singles in the Davis Cup final against hosts France at the end of November, but Belgium still lost 3-2 in Lille.

It cannot be ruled out that Goffin, who was part of the successful “Team Europe” at the Laver Cup in September, now received the late invoice for his impressive marathon year 2017. Andy Murray had also recently ended his season prematurely.
