WTA: Monica Puig ends season prematurely
Monica Puig from Puerto Rico will end the 2018 season early. This was announced by the 2016 Olympic champion on the social networks.
Monica Puig describes her tennis year as a season with ups and downs, which has now ended prematurely. The 25-year-old announced that her retirement at the Linz season opener was the end of her season.
After the first set against Margarita Gasparyan, Puig had to give up in a bad way and continues her injury trend in 2018. Just before the US Open in New York, Puig could not continue in the Connecticut semi-final against Carla Suarez Navarro in the first set (4:4).
“We will now put our heads together, continue the work and concentrate on progress,” Puig explained after her assignment in Linz. The new injury comes just in a phase in which the 25-year-old went up again. After a difficult start to the season and further physical setbacks, Puig reached the quarter-finals in Wuhan, where she eliminated Caroline Wozniacki, among others.
On Facebook and Instagram, Puig turned to her fans: “2018 was a year full of challenges with injuries and difficult defeats, but I won’t forget the wonderful moments. (…) Now it’s time to recover, recharge the batteries and concentrate on preparing for the season. Thank you for your support and love in all ups and downs!”
