WTA: Julia Görges defeats Benic and triumphs in Luxembourg!
Julia Görges wins the title in Luxembourg! In the final, the top-seeded German leaves her opponent Belinda Bencic with no chance of winning 6-4 and 7-5.
The match against the Swiss qualifier started balanced. Only at the score of 2:2 a player could work her way up to a break for the first time. Görges was able to use it with a wonderful forehandreturnwinner.
With strong serves and a solid baseline game, the ninth in the WTA world rankings went on to win 5:3, before she was able to withdraw at the score of 5:4 and thus brought the first set under control.
The 29-year-old was able to take the momentum from the first run well, but she missed two break points in the first service game to the early 1-0 lead.
Neither Görges nor Bencic managed to get a break point until 5-5 and neither player was able to gain a decisive advantage. Then, however, the German attacked her opponent’s serve and took the 21-year-old’s serve 6-5.
Given the fact that Görges hadn’t been confronted with a single breakpoint until then, this game win was of crucial importance. With more crashing serves and a powerful game, Görges earned three match points.
Bencic was able to fend off the first one, but Görges transformed the second one with a forehand winner. For “Jule” the tournament victory in Luxembourg is the second title this year.
