ATP: Stefanos Tsitsipas wins in Stockholm – and keeps an eye on ATP Finals

Stefanos Tsitsipas has crowned his best season so far with the title at the 250cc tournament in Stockholm. In the final he won 6:4, 6:4 over Ernest’s Gulbis. The Greek now has another ambitious goal for this calendar year: to participate in the ATP Finals in London.

Tsitsipas’ victory – one of many that will come in the future, the experts are sure of that.

Tsitsipas started the year on rank 91 of the world rankings, now the young Greek has the chance to his first participation at the ATP finals in London.

935 points behind are the ninth-placed John Isner in the Race to London after the tournament victory in the Live Race. With the highly probable cancellation of the injured Juan Martín del Potro, Isner will slide one place forward and would be there in London.

The NextGen star does not hide his ambitions. “I feel a little exhausted. But like I said before, I have to do my best in the next three weeks to get enough points, to get enough points in the ranking and maybe to play in London,” Tsitsipas was quoted at tennis portals during the week. Basel and the Masters 1000cc tournament in Paris are now on the programme at Tsitsipas.

Tsitsipas has played 74 matches in the current season, 39 of which were won by the protégé of Apostolos Tsitsipas – primarily the father of the now 16th in the world rankings. The 20-year-old scored points mainly in his final appearance at the Masters in Toronto and the final in Barcelona. Tsitsipas lost both title matches against Rafael Nadal.

With ambitions for London it is also clear that Tsitsipas is already certain to participate in the NextGen finals in Milan. Only Alexander Zverev (4770 points) is ahead of Greece in the Race to Milan. However, Zverev is sure to be in London and will skip the tournament in Italy like last year.

Tsitsipas has an alternative program for London. The field in the Italian fashion capital is dotted with top-class youngsters. Players like Denis Shapovalov, Alex De Minaur or Frances Tiafoe line up behind the Greek.
