WTA Finals: Strong Karolina Pliskova beats defending champion Wozniacki
Karolina Pliskova has won her first group game with a convincing performance.
Pliskova won the White Group against defending champion Caroline Wozniacki 6:2, 6:4 and showed an almost flawless performance especially in the first set.
Wozniacki came into the match a little better in the middle of the second half and had the chance to equalize at 5:4, 15:40 from Pliskova’s point of view – after she had fended off two match points in the match before. The Czech, however, remained cool and used match point number three. Pliskova fended off all ten break points from Wozniacki.
Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber will intervene on Monday. The 30-year-old Kielerin, 2016 finalist in Singapore, has to deal with Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands. US Open winner Naomi Osaka (Japan) and Sloane Stephens (USA) also play in the Red Group. The two best players from both groups will move on to the semi-finals on Saturday.
The tournament of the season’s top eight players will take place in Singapore for the last time this year, before being held in Shenzhen, China, for ten years starting in 2019. In total there are seven million dollars to be won, from next year the prize money is to rise to 14 million dollars. The last German winner was Steffi Graf 22 years ago at Madison Square Garden in New York.
