ATP Finals: Will Juan Martin del Potro compete in London?

Is Juan Martin del Potro still trying to make a comeback in 2018? This would speed up the race for a starting place in London for the season finale.

Might the tickets for the ATP World Tour Final in London have to be shuffled again? If the website “La Nacion” is to be believed, Juan Martin del Potro hasn’t yet finally written off a start at the season finale. If the Argentinean manages to make it into the O2 Arena despite the fracture of his kneecap, the Race to London will be even worse.

The 2009 US Open winner had to give up in the Shanghai Round of 16 against Borna Coric after losing the first set.

Four candidates within 720 points will compete in the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Vienna this week. Kei Nishikori could displace John Isner from ninth place if he gets further than the US-American. Dominic Thiem, on the other hand, will pass Kevin Anderson when he does much better than the Wimbledon finalist this year.

Nishikori and Isner are no danger for Thiem in Vienna, but 1,000 points will be available next week in Paris. And there Thiems coach Günter Bresnik has the winner of Miami quite high on the list of contenders for victory.

Marin Cilic, who hasn’t yet qualified for London, is trying hard in Basel. The Croatian hasn’t convinced in the last weeks, but as fifth in the race he can hope for an appearance at the season finale.

In addition to del Potro, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev and world number one Rafael Nadal are also qualified. It does not seem certain at this point that they will be competing in London.
