ATP: This was last in 2004: 13 players won first career title

The 2018 season was once again dominated by Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Nevertheless, there was a lot of news on the ATP tour: 13 players were allowed to celebrate the first title of their career according to the ATP – that was last in 2004.

Nine of the 13 debutants were younger than 25 years old at the time of the first triumph. Frances Tiaofe and Stefanos Tsitsipas were the chicks in this group at the age of 20. Both players will also compete at the Next Gen Finals in Milan.

In general, the new generation also seems to be slowly catching up with the world’s best. In 2006 there were nine first-time tournament winners who had not yet celebrated their 25th birthday.

The oldest premiere champion is the German Mischa Zverev. Alexander’s older brother was able to enjoy his first title at the proud age of 30 – he triumphed in Eastbourne.

All in all, the balance of the players who were aiming for their first tournament victory is still negative. 13 victories face 18 defeats. Possibly one or the other debutant will be added. Marius Copil has the chance to expand the list in the Basel final against Roger Federer, after which the event in Paris-Bercy will provide an opportunity for another premiere champion.
