ATP: Injured Alexander Zverev is defeated in Paris-Bércy Karen Khachanov
Alexander Zverev was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris-Bércy. The German, whose right shoulder was damaged, was defeated by the Russian Karen Khachanov.
Alexander Zverev was in the quarter-finals of the last big event before the ATP Finals in London in the round of the last eight. Karen Khachanov, who was born in Hamburg and had to struggle with an injury on his right shoulder, was beaten 1:6 and 2:6.
Three serve losses in a row – right at the beginning of a match. This is extraordinary for a man with such strong service as Alexander Zverev. No wonder the German number one took a medical break at the score of 1:4. And then they discussed with the coaching team whether it makes sense to continue to the quarter-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris-Bércy.
Khachanov, who had won his third career title just two weeks ago in Moscow, did not let himself be disturbed by this and won the first set 6-1 after 33 minutes.
Zverev had his problems with the serve at the beginning of the second run, but the 21-year-old’s legs worked perfectly. In the longer rallies, the game was now at least balanced, the right shoulder also became warm, Zverev now fully pulled through on his serves. Khachanov, however, showed his qualities as a recoil as in the match against John Isner before. And after several unsuccessful attempts he managed to break to 4:2.
Zverev was no longer able to make a comeback this Friday in the Bércy hall. Khachanov took advantage of his first match point after 70 minutes to score 6:2 and will face the winner of the match between Dominic Thiem and defending champion Jack Sock in the semi-final.
