WTA: defending champion Julia Görges lost to Ashleigh barty in Zhuhai
Julia Görges failed on the penultimate stage to defend her title at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai: Last year’s winner lost to the young Australian Ashleigh Barty in three sets.
At the beginning of the third movement, Michael Geserer once again tried to get Udo Bölts to come along, even if only in a weakened form: “Torment yourself” was the message Geserer gave to his protégé Julia Görges. And so did the Regensburg woman. In the end, however, in vain. Görges lost to Ashleigh Barty from Australia after a playing time of 1:46 hours with 6:4, 3:6 and 2:6.
The balance in the match changed at the beginning of the second set when Görges had to give up her serve for the first time. From this point on Barty played more varied, but also more powerful, Görges on the other hand made too many mistakes.
In the final, Barty will face either Garbine Muguruza or Chinese Qiang Wang on Sunday. The latter took over for Madison Keys, who had to cancel due to injury.
