WTA: Melbourne again and then that’s it: Lucie Safarova announces end of career

The Czech Lucie Safarova will finish the Australian Open 2019 with professional tennis.

While their compatriots are playing USA for the 2019 Fed Cup, Safarova announced her decision at a press conference in Prague. The main reason for this is the many injuries that the 31-year-old has been dealing with since 2015.

And that after her greatest success in the singles, reaching the final of the French Open, where she lost in three sets against Serena Williams. In September 2015 she then reached her highest world ranking position with 5th place in the singles.

In doubles, Tomas Berdych’s ex-girlfriend was even more successful: she collected five Grand Slam titles here (Australian Open 2015, 2017, French Open 2015, 2017, US Open 2016), all alongside Bethanie Mattek-Sands, with whom she formed the “Bucie” team. In August 2017 Safarova was ranked up to 1 in the double world rankings.

In Melbourne, the ever-popular Safarova, which has been flattened by a viral infection for a long time in 2016, wants to compete again in singles and doubles, then it should be over.
