ATP: Season 2019: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga brings Sergi Bruguera into his team

After a season to forget, the Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has brought the former Spanish French Open winner Sergi Bruguera into the team.

As the L’Equipe reported, the commitment of 47-year-old Bruguera was only made possible by the reform of the Davis Cup. The 1993 French Open winner is still captain of the five-time champion, but due to the reduced schedule of the 2019 modernised competition, he has received permission from the Spanish Tennis Federation to join “Team Tsonga” as a coach.

Also Thierry Ascione, the former coach of “JWT”, will stay on board. Bruguera, once number three in the world, had already worked successfully with Tsongas French compatriot Richard Gasquet between 2013 and 2017.

Tsonga is facing a difficult comeback. After a knee operation and a break of more than seven months, the 2008 Australian Open finalist did not return to Metz until mid-September, but lost to Munich-based Peter Gojowczyk in the opening match.

In 2018 Tsonga only played seven tournaments. Last Friday, the 33-year-old had been used on the first day of the Davis Cup final against Croatia in Lille (1:3), but was defeated by Marin Cilic 3:6, 5:7, 4:6. With a match record of five wins in twelve games and 259th in the world rankings, the former number five in the ATP rankings ended a frustrating season.
