Australian Open: Tsonga with wildcard in Melbourne

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be at the Australian Open 2019. This was announced by the French Tennis Federation.

One more audience favourite in Melbourne. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga receives a wildcard for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year in Australia, according to the French Tennis Association.

The 33-year-old experienced an absolute epidemic season due to many injuries and is currently only ranked 258 in the world rankings. Since the field of seeded players ends in a major event with 128th place, Tsonga would have to play his way through the qualification. However, the tournament officials give the Frenchman the chance to take part directly.

Tsonga is one of the absolute crowd favourites on the tour and causes a sensation in the stands with his spectacular way of playing. The safe participation of Tsongas therefore plays all participants into the cards.

In addition, the Frenchman announced that Sergi Bruguera will join the coaching team next season. The 47-year-old Spaniard was coach of Tsongas compatriot Richard Gasquet for a long time. Bruguera has been captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team since November 2017.

On his Twitter account Tsonga announced: “I am very happy to announce the cooperation with Sergi Bruguera. I am very much looking forward to working together and to new challenges.”
