Witthöft makes a comeback after time out

After a break of over a year, Carina Witthöft is celebrating her comeback on the tennis tour at the end of February. The 25-year-old serves at the ITF tournament in Altenkirchen.

Carina Witthöft returns to the tennis circus after a break of over a year.

The 25-year-old, who last gave coaching lessons, will start with a wildcard at the ITF tournament in Altenkirchen (Rhineland-Palatinate) on 23 February.

The tournament organizer announced the Witthöft comeback on its homepage: “For the first time, two winners from previous years will be at the start: Bibiane Schoofs (2017) and Carina Witthöft (2015), who is making her comeback with a wildcard after a long break from competitive sports, have already lifted the winner’s trophy.

In January 2019, Witthöft took a time-out after her injury-related elimination in the qualification for the Australian Open – to the disappointment of Barbara Rittner, Head of Women’s Tennis at the DTB.

“I find it incredibly sad because she has so much talent,” Rittner said at tennisnet last summer. “And because we supported her, had a lot of hope. Carina Witthöft is probably still thinking about what she wants. And if a player doesn’t know that, she will not be successful in the long run.”

Witthöft rejected the statements on Twitter as “disrespectful” and told Spiegel that she will not come back “until I feel physically and mentally at one hundred percent to be competitive”.
